Samui ROCKS!
CHARITY CONCERT IN AID OF TEMPLE SCHOOLS IN KOH SAMUI

On Sunday 8th April, from four o’clock in the afternoon to two o’clock the following morning, Samui Night Plaza in Chaweng rocked to the sound of the island’s top bands and entertainers. Rotary Club of Koh Samui was staging its first Rock Concert since the highly successful ‘Tsunami Aid Concert’ over two years ago. ROCKS used the same winning formula as in the previous concert, asking local resorts and food and beverage outlets to sponsor this event, which was in aid of local temple schools. Generous resort sponsors provided a range of delicious ‘finger foods’, served from beautifully decorated booths. Equally generous beverage sponsors filled three bars, allowing spectators to eat and drink their fill, while enjoying the best entertainment that the island had to offer, and all provided free of charge! There was even a cocktail bar, manned by the irrepressible Flair Monsters. Yet more sponsors donated excellent raffle prizes, which enabled ROCKS to collect more funds from their willing visitors. All the ROCKS booths, selling food and beverage coupons, ‘designer Samui ROCKS T-shirts’ and BBQ food, were manned by ROCKS members, their partners and families and willing ‘Friends of Rotary’ volunteers.
The line up of stars was MC’ed by Ricky Zen, flying in especially for the occasion, with our own DJ Elmendorp of ‘The Family’, who later also delighted the audience with musical talent. Other much welcomed visitors from off the island were Lee Shamrock and Ritchie Newton. There were intervals when DJ Dan kept the music going, and the Samui Flair Monsters delighted the crowd with a spectacular display of whirling cocktail bottles. The finale was the enduring delight of the Ovada Band, who then joined with other artistes in a Mega Jam Band to round off a long and wonderful evening. The outcome was total of over 220,000 baht collected which will certainly be put to good use in the island’s temple schools.
The brilliant entertainers were honoured at the following Rotary Meeting, where they were hosted to lunch and then presented with certificates. Our generous sponsor will also be honoured by a hosted evening buffet, again followed by the presentation of certificates.
After the resounding success of Samui ROCKS, it is the club’s intention to make this an annual event.
