Childrens Day 2007

Since its inception in 2003, ROCKS has thrown itself into the community life of Koh Samui, and one of the most delightful of Thai festivals is National Childrens’ Day, celebrated on a Saturday in the middle of January. For four successive years, ROCKS has joined in the festivities by Nathon Pier, taking along 3 large containers of icecream, complete with cones and tubs. As soon as the first container was opened, children flocked round, served by willing Rotarians scooping for all they were worth. As one ROCKS member’s wrist started to ache then another took over, ably assisted by spouses and friends. Then a consignment of chicken and rice arrived, and 200 portions vanished in five minutes! The icecream servers noticed that some of their children were somewhat on the tall side, some even sporting official badges! A few diminutive customers came back more than once for their delicious treat. By 11am, all three containers were empty, but happily this seemed to coincide with a thinning of the crowd, with ‘customers’ full up with the many food treats to be had. Rotarians rubbed aching wrists as they packed up, and agreed to a person that it was yet another delightful and successful Childrens’ Day.
